Since the explosion of asbestos’ popularity among builders and manufactures in the early 1900s, this substance has been incorporated into thousands of products—everything from ceilings, roofs, floor tiles, sinks, insulation,  cement, flooring, sinks  to pipes. As a result, there are many instances—especially when remodelling—in which you may become exposed to this toxic material, so some knowledge about asbestos exposure and abatement is prudent.

Asbestos Exposure
Generally speaking, there are two main ways you may be exposed to asbestos: through inhalation and through ingestion. Whether or not you experience any negative health effects will depend largely on the concentration you were exposed to and the duration for which you’ve been exposed. Obviously, the greater your exposure to asbestos on either of these scales, the higher the likelihood that you’ll experience an asbestos-related illness.

Asbestos Health Issues
There are four common diseases experienced by those who’ve been exposed to asbestos:
Malignant mesothelioma, which is a fatal cancer of the lungs or abdominal lining.
Asbestos lung cancer, which comes in two forms: small- and non-small cell cancer.
Asbestos pleural disease, which is a non-malignant disease that results in scarring of thin membranes in your lungs and chest
Asbestosis, which also causes scarring in lung tissue.

How to detect Asbestos
Asbestos only becomes a health risk when it is disturbed, either through renovation or construction work, or because of aging and weathering.  Asbestos may have been used in the insulation around your steam pipes, furnace ducts, furnaces, wood burning stoves, or boilers, in vinyl flooring or adhesives used to install tiling, decorative materials sprayed on walls, soundproofing materials used in ceilings, bath panels, joint compounds, cement roofing, shingles, or siding, and more. Be wary of renovating any of these areas without first determining whether you’re at risk for asbestos exposure.

Extreme caution should be taken when renovating an older home in particular. If you’re unsure whether asbestos is present in your home, it is recommended that you get a professional to inspect it since visual inspections are insufficient.  There are two main types of tests conducted by these professionals: Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Find a qualified tester in your area by searching for laboratories with certified TEM or PLM equipment.

Asbestos Removal
If professional tests reveal that your home is indeed contaminated with asbestos, it’s a good idea to have it professionally removed. Although in some cases, where non-friable asbestos (meaning it isn’t easily airborne) was used, you can remove the materials yourself. But in most instances, professional asbestos abatement by a qualified service provider is the wisest course of action, since they’re trained in the safe removal of this deadly substance.
